Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10
Jesus continued, “Take heed that you don’t do your righteousness before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father who is in the heavens.
“When you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
“When you do a charitable deed, let not your left hand know what your right hand does. That your charitable deed may be in secret. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites. They love to pray standing in the synagogues and streets that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you that they have their reward in full.
“When you pray, go into your room. Having closed the door, pray to your Father in secret. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“When you pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathens. They think that they will be heard for their many words. Be not like them. Your Father knows what things you need before you ask him.
“In this way pray –
“Our Father who is in the heavens, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done as in heaven and on earth.
Give us this day our needful bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.
“If you forgive men for their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you forgive not men, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.
“When you fast, be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance. They disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men too fast. Truly, I say to you they have their reward in full.
“When fasting, anoint your head and wash your face. Appear not to be fasting to men, but to your Father who is in secret. Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in nor steal. Where your treasure is, your heart will be.
“The lamp of the body is the eye...
Jesus continued, “Judge not that you are not judged. With what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with what measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
“Why point out the splinter that is in your brother's eye but not consider the beam that is in your eye? Or how will you say to your brother, ‘Let me pull the splinter out of your eye,’ and the beam is in your eye. Hypocrite, pull first the beam out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to pull the splinter out of your brother's eye.
“Give not that which is holy to dogs, nor throw your pearls to swine. They will trample them under, turn, and tear you.
“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. Every one that asks, receives. He that seeks finds. To him that knocks, it will be opened.
“What man is there of you, of whom should his son ask for bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he should ask for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If then you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in the heavens give good gifts to those who ask Him?
“Whatever you would have a man do to you, do you to them. This is the law and the prophets.
“Enter through the strait gate. Wide is the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction. Many go into the wide gate. Strait is the gate, and narrow the way that leads to life, and few find it.
“Beware of false prophets, who come in sheep's clothing, but within are ravenous wolves. By their fruits...
When Jesus came down from the mountain, crowds followed Him. A leper came and worshiped Him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.”
He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I will, be clean.” Immediately, his leprosy was cleansed. Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”
When He had entered into Capernaum, a centurion came to Him pleading, “Lord, my servant lies in my house, palsied, fearfully tormented.” He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy that you come under my roof, but speak only a word, and my servant will be restored to health. I am a man with authority, having soldiers under me. I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes. To another, ‘Come,’ and he comes. To my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
Hearing it, Jesus was filled with admiration and said to those that followed, “Truly I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith, but I say to you that many will come from the east and west and sit at the tables with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in heaven. The sons of the kingdom will go forth into the darkness that is without. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed, be it done for you.” The servant was restored to health in that hour.
Jesus entered Peter’s house and saw his mother-in-law lying ill with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she rose and served Him.
When evening came, they brought to Him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word and cured all that were sick, that it might be fulfilled that which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “Himself took our infirmities and bore our diseases.” Jesus, seeing many crowds about Him, gave orders to depart to the other side.
A scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus said to him, “The foxes have dens, and the birds of the heavens have roosts, but the Son of man has no place to lay his...
Jesus boarded a ship, passed over and came into His own city. They brought Him a palsied man lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, said to the man, “Take courage, son, your sins are forgiven.”
The scribes said within themselves, “This man blasphemes.” Jesus said, “Why do you think evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven?’ Or to say, ‘Rise and walk?’ The Son of man has authority to forgive sins.”
Then He said to the palsied man, “Rise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” He rose and went away to his house.
The crowds saw and were afraid, and glorified God who had given such authority.
Jesus passing by, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customshouse and said, “Follow me.” Matthew rose and followed Him.
As Jesus sat at the table at Matthew’s house, many sinners and tax collectors came and sat with Him and His disciples. The Pharisees saw this and asked His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with sinners and tax collectors?” Hearing it, He said, “Those who are in health have no need of a physician, but those that are sick. Go and learn what ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice’ means. I came not to call righteous men but sinners.”
The disciples of John said to Him, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples fast not?” Jesus said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn while the bridegroom is with them? Days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast.
“No one puts a piece of unfilled cloth on an old garment. That which fills it up takes from the garment, and a worse tear is made.
“Neither do they put new wine into old bottles. Otherwise, the bottles break, and the wine runs out, but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved together.”
While He was speaking these things, a ruler came in and worshiped Him, “My daughter just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”
Jesus rose and followed him, and so did His disciples. As they walked, a woman that had had an issue of blood for twelve years came behind and touched the fringe of His cloak. She said within herself, “If I may only touch His cloak, I will be saved.” He turned and saw her and said, “Daughter, take courage. Your faith has saved you.” The woman was saved from that hour.
Jesus entered the house of the ruler and saw the pipers...
Jesus called His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits so that they could cast them out and cure diseases and every infirmity. Their names were Simon, who is called Peter, Andrew his brother, James and John the sons of Zebedee, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, Lebbeus, Simon the Canaanite and Judas Iscariot who also delivered Him up.
He charged them, “Go not to the Gentiles and don’t enter the city of the Samaritans but go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, preach saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’
“Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out the demons, freely you received, freely give.
“Provide not gold, silver or brass in your belts. No bag for the journey, neither two coats, sandals or a staff. The laborer is worthy of his support.
“Into whatever city or village, you enter, ask who is worthy. Stay there until you leave. When you enter a house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. Whoever will not receive you nor hear your words when you go out of that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet. Truly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.
“I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves, become wise as serpents and guileless as doves, but beware of men. They will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues, they will scourge you. Before governors and kings, you will be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and the Gentiles.
“When they deliver you up, be not anxious about what you will say. In that hour, you will be given what to speak. You are not the speakers, but it is the Spirit of my Father that speaks in you.
“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father the child. Children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
“You will be hated because of my name, but he that endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in this city, flee into the other for truly I say to you, you will not have made the circuit...
