Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up the mountain. When He had sat down, His disciples came to Him. Jesus taught them,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit. Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek. They will inherit the earth.
Blessed are they that mourn. They will be comforted.
Blessed are they that hunger and thirst for righteousness. They will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful. They will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart. They will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers. They will be called sons of God.
Blessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness' sake. Theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they will reproach and persecute you and say every evil thing against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad. Great is your reward in the heavens. So persecuted are the prophets that were before you.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt becomes tasteless, by what means will it be salted? It is then good for nothing but, after being cast out, to be trod upon by men.
“You are the light of the world. A city that lies upon a mountain cannot be hidden, neither do men light a lamp and put it under the basket, but on the lampstand. It gives light to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works. Glorify your Father who is in the heavens.
“Think not that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets. I have not come to destroy but to fulfill. Truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one letter or one point will in no way pass from the law until all be accomplished.
“Whoever makes void one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever will do and teach, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
“Truly I say to you, that unless your righteousness will be more abundant than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you can by no means enter into the kingdom of heaven.
“You have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You will not murder. Whoever will murder will be liable to judgment,’ but I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. Whoever will say to his brother, ‘Worthless fellow,’ will be liable to the Sanhedrim, but whoever will say, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to be cast into Gehenna, the valley of wailing.
“If you bring your gift to the altar, and there, remember that your brother has something against you. Leave your gift before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
“Agree with your opponent quickly; while you are on the road with him, be careful, for perhaps he will deliver you to the judge, the judge to the officer, and you will be cast into prison. Truly I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last farthing.
“You have heard that it was said: ‘You will not commit adultery,’ but I say to you that everyone that looks on a woman in cherished desire has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
“If your right eye ensnares you, pull it out and throw it from yourself. It is profitable for you that one of your members perish and not that your whole body be thrown into Gehenna, the valley of wailing.
“If your right hand ensnares you, cut it off and throw it from yourself. It is profitable for you that one of your members perish and not that your whole body goes away into Gehenna, the valley of wailing.
“It is said: ‘Whoever will put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce,’ but I say to you, that whoever should put away his wife, unless on account of lewdness, causes her to commit adultery. Whoever should marry her that is put away commits adultery.
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You will not swear falsely, but will pay to the Lord your oaths,’ but I say to you, swear not at all. Neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God. Nor by the earth, for it is His footstool. Nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Neither should you swear by your head, for you can’t make one hair white or black, but let your word be yes, yes and no, no. That which is more than this is of the evil one.
“You have heard it said: ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth,’ but I say to you, resist not the injurious. Whoever will strike you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. To him that will go to law with you, and take away your coat, give up your cloak also. Whoever will impress you to go one mile, go with him two.
“Give to him that asks of you. He that would borrow from you, turn not away.
“You have heard that it was said: ‘You will love your neighbor and hate your enemy,’ but I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you. That you may become sons of your Father who is in the heavens. He makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends his rain on the just and the unjust.
“If you love them that love you, what reward do you have? Don't the tax collectors do the same? If you greet your brethren only, what do you have more? Don’t even the heathen the same?
“Be you perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
