The Pharisees and Sadducees tempted Jesus by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven, but He said to them, “A wicked and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, and no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah.” He left them and departed.
The disciples came to the other side but had forgotten to take bread. Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” They reasoned among themselves, “Because we took no bread.”
Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why reason among yourselves, O you of little faith, because you took no bread? Do you not yet understand, and do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many traveling baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many provision baskets you took up? How is it that you don’t understand that I spoke not to you of bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that He did not bid them beware of the leaven but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
When Jesus came into the regions of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” They said, “Some, John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and yet others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am...
After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up into a high mountain apart from the other disciples. He was transfigured before them. His face shone as the sun, and His garments became white as light. There appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with Him. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was speaking a cloud of light overshadowed them. They heard a voice from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased, hear him.”
When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces and were afraid. Jesus came forward and touched them, saying, “Rise and be not afraid.” When they had lifted up their eyes they saw only Jesus.
As they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of man has risen from the dead.”
The disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must first come?” He said, “Elijah indeed comes. He will restore all things, but I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they knew him not but did to him what they pleased. So also will the Son of man suffer by them.” Then, the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
When they came to the crowd, there came a man kneeling and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, he is a lunatic and suffers grievously. He often falls into the fire and into the water. I brought him to your disciples and they were not able to cure him.” Jesus said, “O generation unbelieving...
The disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Calling a little child to Him, He placed it in the midst of them and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whoever will humble himself as this little child he is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
“Whoever will receive one such little child in my name, receives me, but whoever will offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it would be better for him that a millstone was hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
“Woe for the world because of offenses. It is necessary that offenses come, yet woe for the man through whom the offense comes from. If your hand or your foot offends you, cut it off and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or handicap, than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire.
“If your eye offends you, pull it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into Gehenna, the valley of wailing.
“Take heed that you despise not one of these little ones. I say to you, that they’re angels in the heavens that always behold the face of my Father who is in the heavens.
“What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and seek for that which went astray? If it happens that he finds it. Truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that went not astray. So, it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.
“If your brother sins, go, tell him of his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained a brother, but if he hears you not, take with you one or two more so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word may be established. If he refuses to hear them, tell it to the congregation of believers, and if he refuses to hear the congregation of believers also, let him be to you as a heathen and tax collector. Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven. Whatever you free on earth will be freed in heaven.
“Again, I say to you that if two of you on earth agree concerning anything, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven...
Jesus departed from Galilee and came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan. Many crowds followed Him, and He cured them there. The Pharisees came to Him, tempting Him saying, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?” He said, “Have you not read that the Creator at the beginning made them male and female? The man leaves his father, and mother, is joined to his wife, and the two will be one flesh. What God has joined together, let not man undo.”
They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a bill of divorce and put her away?” He said, “Because of the hardness of your hearts, Moses permitted you to put away your wives, but from the beginning, it was not so. I say to you, whoever puts away his wife unless for lewdness, marries another, commits adultery.”
The disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is not good to marry.” He said, “All cannot receive this saying, but those to whom it is given. There are eunuchs who were born so from their mother's womb. There are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men. There are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of heaven. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”
Little children were brought to Him that He might lay His hands on them and pray. The disciples scolded them. Jesus said to them,“Let the little children alone, and don’t forbid them to come to me. To such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” He laid His hands on them, and the children departed.
Behold, someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing will I do that I may have eternal life?” He asked him, “Why do you ask...
Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
“He went out about the third hour and saw others standing in the market idle, and he said to them, ‘Go also into the vineyard, and whatever may be right I will give you.’ They went.
“He again went out about the sixth and ninth hour and did in like manner. About the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’
“When evening came, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call and pay the laborers, beginning from the last to the first.’
“When those who had been hired about the eleventh hour came, they received each one a denarius, but when those who had been hired first came, they thought that they should receive more. They also received each one a denarius.
“When they received one denarius, they murmured against the master of the house, ‘The last laborers worked one hour, and you have made them equal to us who worked the entire day and bore the burden of the heat.’
“He answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I do you no wrong. Didn’t you agree to a denarius? Take that which is yours and go, but I will give to the last even as to you, am I not allowed to do what I will with my own money? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’
“So the last will be first, and the first last.”
As Jesus came near Jerusalem, He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death...
