Chapter 11 | Chapter 12 | Chapter 13 | Chapter 14 | Chapter 15 | Chapter 16
When they drew near to Jerusalem, at the mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of His disciples, and said to them, “Go into the village that is opposite us, and, on entering you will find a colt tied up, on which no man has ever sat. Free and bring him to me. If anyone says to you, ‘Why do you do this?’ Say, ‘The Lord has need of him.’ He will immediately release him to you.”
They went and found the colt and freed him. When those present asked them, “Why do you free the colt?” They answered them as Jesus’ had said. They gave them permission, and brought the colt to Jesus, and threw their clothes upon him, and He sat on him.
Many spread their cloaks on the road, and others bundles of straw. Those that went ahead and followed cried out, “Hosanna, blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest.”
He went into the temple in Jerusalem. Having looked around on all things, the hour being now late, He went out to Bethany with the twelve.
In the morning, after leaving Bethany, He was hungry. He saw a fig tree at a distance that had leaves. When He came to it He found no fruit. He said to it, “Forever no one will eat fruit from you.” His disciples heard Him.
They came to Jerusalem, and entering into the temple, He drove out those that sold and bought in the temple and overturned the tables and seats of the money changers and those that sold doves. He permitted no one to carry a vessel through the temple, and said to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ However, you have made it a den of robbers.”
The chief priests and the scribes heard...
Jesus began to speak to them in parables, “A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge about it, dug an under winevat and built a tower. He let it out to vinedressers and went into another country.
“He sent to the vinedressers a servant that he might receive from the vinedressers of the fruits of the vineyard. They took him and scourged him and sent him away empty.
“Again, he sent to them another servant. They wounded him in the head and dishonored him. He sent another. They killed him, and many others, scourged some and killed some. He sent his beloved son to them last, saying, ‘They will revere my son.’
“The vinedressers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir, come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ They took him and killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.
“What will the lord of the vineyard do?” The scribes said, “He will destroy the vinedressers, and give the vineyard to others.”
Jesus said, “Have you not read this scripture: ‘A stone that the builders rejected became the head of the corner. This was from the Lord, and it is wondrous in our eyes?’” They knew that He had Spoken the parable against them. They sought to lay hold of Him but feared the crowd. Leaving Him, they went away.
Some of the Pharisees and Herodians came to entrap Him. They said to Him, “Teacher, you are true, and care about no one. You don’t look at the reasoning of men but teach the way of God. Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar?” He said to them, “Why tempt me? Bring me a denarius so that I may see it.”
They brought it. He said to them, “Whose image is this, and the superscription?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” They were amazed at Him.
The Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, came to Him saying, “Teacher Moses wrote that if anyone’s brother dies and leaves a wife, and there is no child, his brother will take his wife, and raise up offspring for his brother.
“There were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and dying left no offspring. The second until the seventh in like manner. Last of all, the woman also died.
“In the resurrection, when they rise, of which of them will she be the wife? All seven had her as a wife.” Jesus said to them, “You err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God? When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in the heavens.
“Concerning the dead, that they do rise. Have you not read in the book of Moses, at the Bush, how God spoke to him: ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You err.”
As they disputed amongst...
As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of His disciples said, “Teacher, see what manner of stones and buildings.” He said to him, “See these great buildings? There will not be left a stone upon a stone that will not be thrown down.”
As He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite to the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked Him privately, “When will these things be? What are the signs when all these things will be accomplished?” Jesus said, “See that no one deceives you. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.
“When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled. They must take place, but this is not yet the end. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, there will be famines. These are the beginning of pains.
“See you to yourselves. They will deliver you up to councils, in synagogues you will be beaten and before governors and kings you will stand for my sake, for a testimony to them.
“Among all nations the gospel first must be preached.
“When they lead you to deliver you up, be not anxious what you will speak, but whatever to speak will be given to you in that hour. You are not the speakers, but the Holy Spirit.
“Brother will deliver up brother to death, the father the child and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.
“You will be hated by all because of my name, but he that endures to the end, he will be saved.
“When you see the abomination of desolation standing where it ought not then let those in Judea flee to the mountains. He that is on the housetop let him not come down nor go in to take anything from his house. He that is in the field let him not turn back to take his cloak.
“Woe for those who are with child or give suck in those days but pray that it may not take place in winter. Those days will be affliction, such as has not been from the beginning of creation, which God created, until now, and will not be. Unless the Lord had shortened the days, no flesh would have been saved. Because of the ones He has chosen He has shortened the days.
“If anyone says to you, ‘Lo, here is the Anointed One...
After two days came the Passover and the feast of unleavened bread. The chief priests and scribes sought how they might take Jesus and put Him to death. They said, “Not on the feast, there might be a ruckus of the people.”
In Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as Jesus sat at the table a woman came with a very costly alabaster box of pure spikenard ointment. She broke the box and poured it on His head. Some expressed displeasure, “Why was this ointment wasted? The ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” They murmured against her, but Jesus said, “Let her alone, why give her trouble? She has done a good work. The poor you have always with you, and when you will, you can do them good. You won’t always have me. What she could she has done. She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial. Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel will be preached, this also will be told in a memorial of her.”
Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests to deliver Jesus to them. When they heard him, they were glad and promised to give him money. He sought a convenient way to do this.
On the first day of the feast, His disciples said to Him, “Where will you have us make ready so that you may eat the Passover?” Jesus sent two of His disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and there you will find a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house that the Teacher says, ‘Where is your guest chamber where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Prepare for us there.”
The disciples went to the city, found the man as He had said, and made ready the Passover. When it was evening, He came with the twelve. As they sat at the table and ate, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will deliver me up, he that eats with me.”
They began to be sad and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” He said to them, “One of the twelve, he that dips with me into the dish. The Son of man goes, as it is written of him, but woe for that man by whom the Son of man is delivered up. It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
As they ate, having taken bread and blessed it, He broke and gave it to them and said, “Take, this is my body.”
Having taken the cup and given thanks, He gave it to them. They all drank of it. He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for many. Truly I say to you that I will no longer drink the fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
They sang a hymn and went out to the mount of Olives. Jesus said to them, “You all will be offended. It is written: ‘I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ After I have risen, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to Him, “Though all should be offended, I will not.”
Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that you, on this night, before a cock will have crowed twice, you will deny me three times.” He said vehemently, “Though I will die with you, I will in no way deny you.” In like manner they all said the same.
They came to a place, the name of which is Gethsemane. He said to His disciples, “Sit here until I pray.”
He took with him Peter, James, and John and began to be in great anguish. He said to them, “My soul is encompassed with sorrow even to death. Remain here and watch.”
Going forward a little, He fell on the ground and prayed that, if it was possible, the hour might pass away from Him. He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will.”
He comes and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, “Simon, you sleep? Don't you have the strength to watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Again, He went away and prayed, saying the same words. He returned and found them sleeping again. He came the third time and said to them, “Sleep the remaining time, and rest. It is enough. The hour has come, behold, the Son of man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go, behold, he that delivers me up is at hand.”
Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas Iscariot came with a crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests, scribes...
In the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and Sanhedrim, having prepared counsel, bound and led Jesus away, delivering Him to Pilate. Pilate asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered, “You said it.”
The chief priests accused Him of many things. Pilate asked Him, “Answer you nothing? See how many things they accuse you of?” Jesus no longer answered anything, so Pilate wondered.
At every feast Pilate released one prisoner of the people’s choice. There was one called Barabbas bound with the insurgents who had committed murder. The crowd asked, “Will you do as you normally do for us?” Pilate answered them, “Will you wish that I release to you the King of the Jews?”
He knew that the chief priests had delivered Him up because of envy. The chief priests instigated the crowd to ask for the release of Barabbas. Pilate again asked them, “What about the King of the Jews?” They cried out, “Crucify Him.”
Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?” They cried out vehemently, “Crucify Him.” Pilate, willing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas. Jesus was scourged in preparation to be crucified.
The soldiers led Him away from the Pretorium. They clothed Him in purple and put a crown of thorns on His head. They began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews.” Striking His head with a reed, they spit on Him and bowed their knees worshiping Him.
When they had derided Him, they took off the purple and put on Him His own clothes. They led Him out to crucify Him. They impressed one, Simon, a Cyrenian, as he passed by coming from the country to bear His cross.
They brought Him to the place called Golgotha, which is when translated, the place of a skull. They gave Him wine mingled with myrrh, but He did not drink it. They crucified Him, and divided His garments among them, casting a lot on what each should take.
It was the third hour when they crucified Him. The superscription on His accusation read – THE KING OF THE JEWS. With Him they crucify two robbers, one on His right and left. Those that passed...
When the Sabbath had passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices that they might come and anoint Him.
The sun had just risen as they came to the sepulcher on the first of the week. They said among themselves, “Who will roll away for us the stone from the door of the sepulcher?”
Looking up they saw that the large stone had been rolled away. They entered the sepulcher and saw a young man, sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe. They were amazed. He said to them, “Be not amazed...
