Chapter 16 | Chapter 17 | Chapter 18 | Chapter 19 | Chapter 20 | Chapter 21
Jesus said to His disciples, “These things have I spoken to you that you may not be offended. They will put you out of the synagogues, the hour comes that everyone that kills you will think that he offers service to God. These things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me, but these things I have spoken to you that when the hour comes you may remember them, that I told you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
“Now I go to Him that sent me, and no one of you asks me, ‘Where do you go?’ Yet, because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
“I tell you the truth, it is profitable for you that I go away. If I don’t go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.
“When he comes, he will convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. Of sin indeed, because they believe not in me. Of righteousness, because I go to the Father and you see me no more. Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
“I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When he has come, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you in all the truth. He will not speak of himself, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will announce to you things to come. He will glorify me, for he will take of mine and announce it to you.
“All things whatever the Father has are mine; I said that he takes of mine and announces to you. A little while, and you see me no more, and again a little while, and you will see me again.”
Some of His disciples said one to another, “What is this that He says to us: ‘A little while, and you see me not, and again a little while, and you will see me again?’ And that: ‘I go to the Father?’” Others said, “What is it that He says: ‘The little while?’ We know not what He says.” Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, “Concerning this, do you inquire among yourselves because I said, a little while, and you see me not, and again a little while, and you will see me again? Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice, you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will become joy.
“The wife, when she is in labor, has sorrow...
Jesus lifted His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come, glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you, as you have given him authority over all flesh, that to all that you have given him he may give them life eternal.
“Eternal life is this, that they may know you, the only true God, and me the Anointed One, whom you have sent. I have glorified you on the earth, having finished the work that you gave me to do. Now, Father, glorify me with yourself with the glory that I had with you before the world was.
“I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they are, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that all things whatever you have given me are from you. The words that you gave me I have given them, and they have received them, and have known in truth that I came forth from you and have believed you sent me.
“I pray for them. I pray not for the world, but for those that you have given me, for they are mine, and all mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified in them.
“I am no longer in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to you. Holy Father, keep them in my name that you have given me, that they may be one, as we.
“When I was with them that you have given me, I kept them in your name, I have guarded them, and not one of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the Scripture may be fulfilled. Now I come to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
“I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world as I am not of the world. I pray not that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.
“They are not of the world, as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth. As you did send me into the world, I sent them into the world. Them I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in the truth.
“Not for these only do I pray, but also...
Jesus went with His disciples to a garden beyond the brook of Cedar. Judas also knew the place, and having received the attendants from the chief priests, came there with torches, lamps, and weapons. Jesus, knowing all things that were about to happen, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said, “I am he.”
When He said this, they stepped back. Again, He asked them, “Whom do you seek?” They said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he; if then you seek me, let these go away. That the word might be fulfilled which he spoke: ‘Of those that you have given me I have lost none.’”
Peter drew his sword and struck the servant, Malchus, and cut off his right ear. Jesus then said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath. The cup that the Father has given me, will I not drink it?”
The officer and attendants of the Jews took Jesus and bound and led Him to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, and it was Caiaphas that advised the Jews that it was profitable that one man should die for the people.
Peter and another disciple followed behind. That disciple was acquainted with the chief priest, and went with Jesus into the court, but Peter stood at the gate. Then the other disciple spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. The maidservant said to Peter, “Are you one of His disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
It was cold and the servants and the attendants made a fire of coals. They were standing and warming themselves. Peter also stood with them.
Then the chief priest asked Jesus concerning His disciples and teaching. Jesus answered him, “I have spoken plainly to the world, I have always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews come together, and in secret have I spoken nothing. Why do you ask me? Ask those that have heard what I spoke to them, behold, they know what I have said.”
When He had spoken one of the attendants struck Jesus with open hand, saying, “Answer the chief priest.” Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil, but if well, why do you smite me?” Annas then bound and sent Him to Caiaphas.
Peter was standing and warming himself. They then said to him, “Are you not also one of His disciples?” He said, “I am not.”
One of the servants of the chief priest, being a relative...
Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. The soldiers weaved a crown of thorns and put it on His head, threw a purple garment around Him and came to Him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They struck Him with the open hand.
Pilate again came forth and said to them, “I bring Him to you, that you may know that I find no fault.” Jesus came forth wearing the crown of thorns and purple garment, and Pilate said to them, “Behold the man.” When the chief priests and attendants saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify, crucify.”
Pilate said, “Take Him and crucify Him. I find no fault in Him.” The Jews answered, “We have the law, and according to the law, He ought to die because He made himself the Son of God.”
When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid and went into the pretorium again, and said to Jesus, “Who are you?“ Jesus gave him no answer.
Pilate said to Him, “You don’t speak to me? You know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You have no authority over me unless it had been given you from above, he that delivered me to you has the greater sin.”
After this Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you aren’t a friend of Caesar, everyone that makes himself king speaks against Caesar.”
Pilate brought Jesus forth and sat on the judgment seat in a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. It was about the sixth hour on the preparation of the Passover, and he said to the Jews, “Behold your king.” They cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him.”
Pilate said to them, “Will I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified.
They took Jesus. Bearing the cross for Himself, He went forth to a place called the place of a skull, in Hebrew Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, on this side and on that, but Jesus in the midst. Pilate wrote a title and put it on His cross – JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, “Write not, The king of the Jews. But that He said, I am the king of the Jews.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
The soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments, and made four parts, one for each soldier, but the coat was without seam. They said, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots whose it will be.” That the scripture might be fulfilled: “They divided my garments among them, and on my raiment they cast lots.”
There stood by the cross of Jesus, His mother, her sister, Mary, the wife of Cleopas and Mary Magdalene. Jesus, seeing...
On the first of the week after the Passover, Mary Magdalene came to the sepulcher early, it being yet dark, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. She ran and came to Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid Him.”
Peter and the other disciple went to the sepulcher. They ran together; the other disciple outran Peter and came first to the sepulcher. Having stooped down, he saw the linen cloth lying; however, he didn’t go in. Then comes Peter, following him. He went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen cloth lying, and the handkerchief, which was on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.
The other disciple then went in, saw, and believed. They not yet knew the scripture, that He must rise from the dead. The disciples then went away to their homes, but Mary stood by herself at the sepulcher weeping. As she wept, she stooped down and looked into the sepulcher and saw two angels in white, sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
They said to her, “Woman, why do you weep?” She said, “They have taken my Lord, and I know not where they have laid Him.”
Having said these things, she turned back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why do you weep? Who do you seek?” She, supposing that He was the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, they took Him away, tell me where they have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni?” Which is translated, “Teacher.”
Jesus said to her, “Touch me not. I have not yet ascended to my Father, but go to my brethren and say to them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.”
Mary went and told the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.” She told them the things He had said to her.
When evening came, Jesus came into the room where the disciples sat. He stood amidst and, once the doors closed, He said to them, “Peace to you.”
Having said this, He showed them His hands...
Jesus manifested Himself to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself thus.
Peter, Thomas, who is called Didymus, Nathaniel, who was from Cana of Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together at the sea of Tiberias. Peter said to them, “I go fishing.” They said, “We also are go with you.”
They entered the ship and on that night they caught nothing. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, the disciples, however, knew not that it was Him. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have anything to eat besides bread?” They answered Him, “No.”
He said, “Cast the net on the right side of the ship.” They cast and were no longer able to draw it because of the number of fish.
He said to that disciple who loved Peter, “It is the Lord.” Peter tightened up his upper garment, for he was naked, and threw himself into the sea.
The other disciples came with the ship, dragging the net of fish. When they had come to the land, they saw a fire of coals and fish lying on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring the fish that you have just taken.”
Peter came and drew the net to land full of fish, a hundred and fifty-three, and the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” The disciples ventured not to ask Him, “Who are you?” Knowing that it was the Lord.
Jesus came and took the bread and fish and gave...
